Mud Season? What is it?
When you talk to locals around Summit County you’ll hear them talk about “mud season”. Mud season is what we endearingly refer to the period between the closing of most ski resorts (except A-basin) and Memorial Day.
Mud season sees a significant decrease in out-of-town visitors to Summit County. With most ski resorts closed, the mass influx of skiers and boarders are gone. The exception are the hard-core enthusiasts who take advantage of Arapahoe Basin’s late season fun, and backcountry ski and board options.
The reduction in tourist traffic to the area means local restaurants either close for cleaning and remodeling or offer great mud season deals to lure in the scant pedestrians mulling about our oddly empty streets. Breckenridge and the surrounding area of Summit County is home to some of the finest restaurants in Colorado. During the shoulder and mud seasons, diners can expect to get great deals on gourmet dining without the long waits. Just call to make sure they are open and ready to welcome you!
Things to Do in Mud Season
There are still plenty of wonderful activities to enjoy during mud season. Summit County’s communities offer a lot of activities and entertainment. If you like the outdoors, consider a hike on any of the area’s south facing, lower elevation trails, or go snowshoeing on the higher peaks. Other activities include riding bikes on one of the many bike paths once the snow clears. Most ski rental shops transform during this time and begin offering mountain and road bike rentals.
For adventures off the beaten path, there are many off-road trails for jeeps and ATVs. While most of our high-altitude trails won’t open until late June, there are some nice lower elevation trails available for recreation this time of year. It is easy to spot wildlife on trails, as the animals hang out at lower altitudes before the snow melts off the higher peaks. You may be able to spot elk, mountain sheep and goats, moose, and the occasional bear while driving around Summit County.
Fishing is another popular activity during mud season. Despite rising river levels, fishing can be great. Talk to any of our expert, local fly-fishing guides and to get the scoop on where the fish are, and what they’re biting on. Cutthroat Anglers in Silverthorne is a great fly-fishing resource.
If you are more inclined to stay indoors, there are wonderful recreation centers located in Breckenridge and Silverthorne offering gym classes, yoga, swimming pools, and sport facilities. For something different, Summit County’s rich history is full of interesting people and events, and you can learn all about it at one of the area’s excellent museums. There are also some outstanding art galleries featuring work by local and national artists.
